The Emmy nominations 2010 were handed out in mid-July. Tonight, the 2010 nominations will be narrowed down again, as the Emmy nominees face off for the big prizes. The best comedies, dramas, and TV movies are settingĀ out to be the biggest winners tonight, or to at least get one award or two. For weeks, pundits and experts have been making predictions, choosing both old favorites and new competitors. But do the 2010 Emmy nominations provide any early clues as to which programs will win big?
The most nominated shows were Glee, Modern Family, Mad Men, 30 Rock and Lost. None of this was a surprise, given Glee and Modern Family’s freshman years, Mad Men and 30 Rock being such frequent winners, and Lost‘s final swan song.
Although they cleaned up in this year’s Emmy nominations, that doesn’t mean they will be the big winners. Glee and Modern Family are guaranteed to cancel each other out, as they are neck-and-neck for Best Comedy. But Glee got the most nods of the year, and already won for Neil Patrick Harris’s guest spot.
However, Modern Family had the most Emmy nominations for the cast, as almost every adult actor is in the supporting categories. Yet only one of their three nominated men can win, and their two supporting actress nominees are destined to lose to Jane Lynch.
As for 30 Rock, they usually rule over the comedy winners, but things are expected to be different this time. Even if the show finally loses, they might want to give it at least one major award, so Tina Fey or Alec Baldwin could come through again. Baldwin is an underdog against Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons – yet since the 2010 Emmy nominations snubbed Big Bang for Best Comedy, it might be an omen.
On the drama side, Mad Men is a stable favorite to win Best Drama again. Yet in spite of their series victories, they have never had winners in the acting categories. Jon Hamm and January Jones are in crowded lead categories, while John Slattery is an underdog for supporting actor. Elisabeth Moss or Christina Hendricks could break this losing streak in the supporting actress category – or they could cancel each other out.
